Ten Movies About Television

7 May

Television has long been a favorite subject for the moviemakers. Perhaps it’s because railing on TV is the closest they get to reproaching their own industry. In the early 90s we were warned, “TV is the reason why less than 10 percent of our nation reads books daily, why most people think Central America means Kansas, socialism means un-American, and Apartheid is a new headache remedy.” And two decades and a couple hundred more channels later, it appears television still is “the drug of the nation”. Here are 10 movies about television.

1.Quiz Show

“Cheating on a quiz show? That’s sort of like plagiarizing a comic strip.”

2.Network

“We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’”

3.A Face in the Crowd

“I’m not just an entertainer. I’m an influence, a wielder of opinion, a force… a force!”

4.Videodrome

“I’m looking for something that’ll… break through. You know?”

5.Broadcast News

“A lot of alliteration from anxious anchors placed in powerful posts!”

6.UHF

“Lesbian Nazi Hookers Abducted by UFOs and Forced Into Weight Loss Programs… all next week on Town Talk.”

7.The Insider

-”I’m just a commodity to you, aren’t I? I could be anything. Right? Anything worth putting on between commercials.”
-”To a network, probably, we’re all commodities.”

8.Tootsie

-”I’m just an untalented old has-been.”
-”Were you ever famous?”
-”No.”
“Then how can you be a has-been?”

9.The Truman Show

“If his was more than just a vague ambition, if he was absolutely determined to discover the truth, there’s no way we could prevent him.”

10.Good Night and Good Luck

“We have currently a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information. Our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse, and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it, and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture too late.”

10 Despots In The Movies

8 Mar

Webster’s defines a despot as: “a ruler who holds absolute power, typically exercising that power in a cruel or oppressive way”. And whether they were made fun of for being short as a child or weren’t hugged enough by their mother, nothing seems to fill that hole inside. When you really sit down to look at it, however, absolute power is absurd and the ones that clamor for it even more so. So let’s look at 10 films that examined the evil and often strangely hilarious reigns of some of history’s biggest assholes. Here are 10 despots in the movies. [...]
